“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” (Colossians 3:23-24)
Note that we are called to work with all our hearts—I believe this qualifies it as worship. Rick Warren once said, “If your heart is not in it, you are in the wrong job. If you are not working with all your heart, you are sinning.” Is a half-hearted commitment at work okay? Is it possible that some of us should hear the words someday: “Half done, half-good and half-faithful servant! You have been half-faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of fewer things. Come and share in half of your master’s happiness!” (Matthew 25:23 revised).
I remember hearing Marcus Buckingham, one of the world’s most prominent researchers on strengths and leadership at work, speak at a conference about his discoveries at Gallup that a high percentage of people all around the world do not like their jobs. For example, only 29% of employees believe they are working in their sweet spot in the USA alone. More recently, based on his team's data and research in 2020, only 14% of workers globally are fully engaged. This means that 86% of workers are "Just coming to work," instead of contributing all they could to their organizations.
Tragically, most people are not working with all their hearts at work. Not only are they missing out on joy in the journey, but they're also failing to glorify God and fulfill his mandate: “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). We were made to thrive, not just survive. And that includes our work world. So let's bring our 100 percent, our A+ game, and our fully-engaged hearts to whatever we do for the glory of God!
