In Ephesians 2:10, Paul states: “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
Those of you who are artists among my readership may be interested to know that the word “handiwork” finds its origins in the same Greek root from which we derive our English word, “poem.” Not that Paul was implying poetry in this passage—rather, he’s referring to us as God’s masterpieces. But we could certainly say that in one sense we are God’s poetry; he adds another stanza to the poetry of our lives each time we create something…each time we engage in work.
Furthermore, implied in this passage is the idea that we are made in God’s image to create. After all, the first thing God did according to Genesis 1 was create. If we are made in God's image we too are creators; we were made in his image to create…to build cool things and do good works!
If you are an artist engaging in our culture through writing, painting, sculpting or any other form of art, your work is Godlike/sacred…it’s worship. If you are an entrepreneur starting new businesses, building homes, shaping landscapes or whatever, your work is Godlike/sacred…it's worship. If you are a teacher or trainer, creating new ideas in others’ minds, your work is Godlike/sacred…it’s worship. All “work” that enhances our culture or society is Godlike, sacred, and worship!
So go out today and add another stanza to your life-poem! Create, work, worship!
